Dear folks ...

There's much to catch you up on. But for now, a quick overview of what's happening with Independent Arts & Media.

It would be only mildly inaccurate to call Indy Arts a "punk PBS" -- we cherish the do-it-yourself ethos, though we are not so interested in the latter's centralized, topheavy, hierarchical management style. Perhaps, more accurately, Indy Arts is producers' co-op ... only for media and culture workers rather than, say, dairy farmers.

Our mission is to expand civic dialogue by increasing access to independent voices. We do this through a number of programs, and all of them have been taking big strides. A summary follows below.

So take a quick browse through this update, and THANK YOU for your support for free expression, freedom of information and the culture of democracy!

Sincerely,

Josh Wilson
Program Director

* (1) * THE EIGHTH ANNUAL EXPO FOR THE ARTIST & MUSICIAN ... Sept. 15 @ SomArts; Sept. 10-14 @ various venues ...

So, it's the EIGHTH anniversary of the Expo, and we are amazed! The volunteer producers have put together an incredible lineup of free workshops (covering everything from film financing to licensing your music to a science-fiction writing workshop), a heavyweight panel on arts funding at CounterPulse, TWO film screenings (including one at Dolby Labs), plus performances, an open mic and more than 75 community exhibitors.

Whew! Get the full details online:

* (2) * SHAPING SAN FRANCISCO RADIO ... "Black Exodus/Black Evictions" on KUSF tonight, Thursday, Aug. 23

This is the last month of Shaping SF Radio. Depending on funding, we may try to restart the program in January 2008. Meanwhile, tune in tonight for part three of "Black Evictions/Black Exodus," a powerful look at race, real estate and power in Bayview-Hunters Point. As always, the live talk was booked and produced by Shaping SF/CounterPulse, and produced for radio by Indy Arts.

* (3) * POLLINATOR ... a new discussion and resource email list!

Pollinator connects artists, musicians, producers and culture workers of all sorts with human and material resources for current and local art projects. This is a discussion list with a focus on sharing resources and connecting with co-conspirators. Pollinator was dreamt up by local artist Stephanie Gerson, who proposed the idea to us, and then helped move the whole project forward. Thanks Steph! We'll formally launch the listserv tomorrow, FRIDAY, via the Expo announcement list, and it will take a little while to build the community. You can get a jump on it here:

* (4) * FISCAL SPONSORSHIP

Well, the Indy Arts fiscal sponsorship program is quite exciting right now. We are honored to welcome TWO new programs to our community of free-speech/civil-society boosters.

     -- The New Institute ... in response to the cultural climate and particular
     urban condition of the Bayview Hunter's Point neighborhood,
     The New Institute aims to provide a platform for cultural activity
     that addresses alternatives to dominant ideologies and points
     towards social change. Project directors: Allegra Madsen and Julia Hamilton.

     -- No Boss ... the newsletter of the Network of Bay Area Worker Co-ops
     The NOBAWC newsletter (No Boss, get it?) advances dialogue and
     resources about economic independence and the co-op movement.

* (5) * NEWSDESK.org

Newsdesk.org editor Josh Wilson was in Washington, D.C., in early August for a Journalism That Matters session on building the "next newsroom," and envisioning solutions to the financial crisis current laying seige to the journalism sector. There's a LOT more to say on this, but for now, let's send you straight to the JTM home page for details:
