From indyarts at lists.artsandmedia.net Thu Aug 16 14:26:24 2007 From: indyarts at lists.artsandmedia.net (indyarts@lists.artsandmedia.net) Date: Thu Aug 16 14:29:42 2007 Subject: Special Event: Craigslist Foundation this Saturday Message-ID: Dear Friends ... Independent Arts & Media would like to let you know about an event known as the Craigslist Foundation Nonprofit Boot Camp. It happens THIS SATURDAY, August 18, at UC Berkeley. You will have to throw down some change to get in, but, for anyone interested in exploring and extending the possibilities of cultural work that's focused on mission and issues rather than pure profit, this event is for you: CRAIGSLIST FOUNDATION NONPROFIT BOOT CAMP August 18, 2007, 8:30am-6:30pm, UC Berkeley http://www.craigslistfoundation.org/eflyer07/EFLYER.htm We at Indy Arts have long held that the nonprofit option provides intriguing opportunity for socially minded DIY folks to channel their creative energy into meaningful projects that benefit the community at large. There are advantages and drawbacks to going the nonprofit route. Although doing so keeps a venture focused on charitable purposes, sometimes nonprofits can move beyond being well-managed charitable enterprises, and morph into "corporatized" entities with topheavy, hierarchical methodologies that are not always beneficial for certain sorts of grassroots/community-level media and culture programs. And then there's the flip side -- running a nonprofit that's primarily driven by volunteers. Finding, motivating, coordinating and retaining that volunteer energy is enormously difficult -- but when it works, the benefits can be literally transformative for your project. These issues need to be investigated -- and solutions can be developed within the nonprofit arena itself. You will find few venues for this inquiry better than the Craigslist Foundation boot camp. The collective knowledge-base of the attendees and presenters is remarkable. Here are the details. Do check them out: CRAIGSLIST FOUNDATION NONPROFIT BOOT CAMP August 18, 2007, 8:30am-6:30pm, UC Berkeley http://www.craigslistfoundation.org/eflyer07/EFLYER.htm Best wishes, The Indy Arts Crew p.s. We will be providing you with an update on all our programming in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!! From indyarts at lists.artsandmedia.net Thu Aug 23 13:17:57 2007 From: indyarts at lists.artsandmedia.net (indyarts@lists.artsandmedia.net) Date: Thu Aug 23 13:20:26 2007 Subject: [Indy Arts] Expo 2007, Pollinator, Shaping SF Radio and more ... Message-ID: Dear folks ... There's much to catch you up on. But for now, a quick overview of what's happening with Independent Arts & Media. It would be only mildly inaccurate to call Indy Arts a "punk PBS" -- we cherish the do-it-yourself ethos, though we are not so interested in the latter's centralized, topheavy, hierarchical management style. Perhaps, more accurately, Indy Arts is producers' co-op ... only for media and culture workers rather than, say, dairy farmers. Our mission is to expand civic dialogue by increasing access to independent voices. We do this through a number of programs, and all of them have been taking big strides. A summary follows below. So take a quick browse through this update, and THANK YOU for your support for free expression, freedom of information and the culture of democracy! Sincerely, Josh Wilson Program Director http://artsandmedia.net/ p.s. Your donations are tax-deductible and *directly* support the remarkable output of this volunteer-driven community service. Pollinator was dreamt up by local artist Stephanie Gerson, who proposed the idea to us, and then helped move the whole project forward. Thanks Steph! We'll formally launch the listserv tomorrow, FRIDAY, via the Expo announcement list, and it will take a little while to build the community. You can get a jump on it here: Pollinator -- Material & Human Resources for Arts & Culture http://lists.artsandmedia.net/mailman/listinfo/pollinator/ * (4) * FISCAL SPONSORSHIP Well, the Indy Arts fiscal sponsorship program is quite exciting right now.
