Dear Friend of Independent Arts & Media;
All through the opening months of 2006 we've been honored to support
Shaping San Francisco's SPRING TALKS. The events have been happening
on the second and last Wednesdays of each month at CounterPulse on
Mission at Ninth St. in San Francisco.
Each session of Spring Talks 2006 has been a revelation, bringing
overflow audiences of intelligent, active folks who ask questions,
raise points, expand the dialog, and help shatter the standard Q&A
format of most speaker and panel events. From day one, Spring Talks
2006 has broken new topical ground, and opened doors for civic dialog
that makes a difference.
So far in 2006, Spring Talks has:
-- Explored our forgotten history, including the American-Philippine
War, and the remarkable general strikes in San Francisco and Oakland.
-- Rediscovered the "pre-colonial" ecosystems of the San Francisco
Bay Area -- pockets of which are still extant if you know where to
look -- and tackled myths and realities of "nature in the city."
And there's more to come -- Spring Talks runs clear through June, and
March alone is packing some heavy topics bound to make you more aware
of where you live, why it is the way it is ... and maybe even what
you can do about it.
Details for March are below. Thanks so much for your support!

--= MARCH 8: Infrastructure Wars & The Livable City =--
From the Freeway Revolt to "Save Telegraph Hill," San Franciscans
have fought for a human-centered city. Today, redevelopment plans,
road-building and more are again affecting how we live in the City by
the Bay. Get the context and ponder the possibilities, from
the historic
Burnham Plan to the latest conflicts over construction and traffic.
Featuring: Chris Carlsson, Stacey Parker (Garden For The Environment),
Calvin Welch (Council of Community Housing Organizations),
Antonio Alcala.

--= MARCH 29: What's Natural About Natural Disasters? =--
Earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, epidemic flu, chronic disease and many
more effects of the natural world can change, destroy and reshape lives
and societies. Join the conversation and consider ways to
foster community
responses to these disasters based on mutual aid, cooperation, and a
reshaped public health infrastructure.
Featuring: Tom Athanasiou (Eco-Equity; author, Divided
Planet), Sherlina
Nager (Literacy for Environmental Justice), and Peter Davidson (UCSF
director of the Tenderloin's UFO project).
