The Minutemen embodied the D.I.Y. spirit, artistic accomplishment and 
cultural independence that makes punk music a world-changing force.

That same spirit inspires all our efforts at Independent Arts & 
Media. On February 15, IAM presents two screenings at the San 
Francisco Art Institute of "We Jam Econo: The Story of the 
Minutemen," a breakthrough documentary that charts the course of the 
legendary band from San Pedro, California.

Director Tim Irwin and producer Keith Schieron have assembled a trove 
of lost performances and interviews with the Minutemen, breathtaking 
live footage, and exclusive comments from legions of 
independent-music luminaries, including Henry Rollins, Sonic Youth's 
Thurston Moore, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Ian Mackaye of 
Fugazi. More than a film tribute to one of the greatest bands of any 
era, "We Jam Econo: The Story of the Minutemen" is an eye-opening 
document of the do-it-yourself revolution that's still going on today.

In the wake of the early punk explosion of the 1970s, bassist Mike 
Watt, drummer George Hurley and the late guitarist and frontman D. 
Boone fused jazz, funk, improvisation, intellectually jagged lyrics 
and hardcore punk velocity to create a startlingly fresh style of 
rock music. From their humble origins as a SoCal garage band to their 
hard-won status as an internationally renowned musical phenomenon, 
the Minutemen were always dedicated to "making our lives into art," 
as Watt puts it years later.

More than 20 years later, the band's music and message remain urgent, 
contemporary, and thrilling to the core. Independent Arts & Media, 
the producer of the annual Expo for the Artist & Musician, is 
dedicated to independent culture and community as the foundation of a 
thriving democracy, and is honored to present this benefit screening 
of "We Jam Econo: The Story of the Minutemen."

The screenings on February 15 benefit Independent Arts & Media, and 
will be introduced by V. Vale, San Francisco's original D.I.Y. 
documentarian and proprietor of Re/Search Publications.
