* Ethio-jazz with Mulatu Astatke and the Either/Orchestra - 02/02/2008

  The concert unites the Massachusetts-based 10-piece Either/
  Orchestra (E/O) with composer/vibraphonist/percussionist
  Mulatu Astatke, the inventor of Ethio-jazz. This is
  Mr. Astatke's first-ever appearance on the West Coast,
  and the first time the E/O has performed in the Bay
  Area since 1994.

   Renowned historian and UC Berkeley professor, Dr. Tyler
   Stovall writes about the inversion of the American myth of
   success: a group that had to leave the States in order to
   make good. They were African-American expatriates: writers,
   musicians, artists, scholars, scientists, and businessmen who
   made new lives for themselves in Paris.

  art event in the East Bay, drawing over 50,000 visitors to

  Preview Tour, artist workshops, an online gallery, networking

  Joey Sayers is a cartoonist living in Oakland, California.  She has been
  drawing comics since she was very young.  Her first strip, P.O.W. (Play on
  Words), drawn at age 7 was considered hilarious by herself and her

  Once a year, Pro Arts hosts Juried Annual, a juried exhibition
  of work by its member artist constituency. The exhibition showcases
  work by artists of all ages who live and work in the Bay Area.

  installation, digital, installation and performance art) for
  consideration, and over 1,000 pieces are reviewed for

  It's an old adage that the "personal is political." But in
  these times of environmental degradation and increasing
  political polarization, the conflicts in our bodies and our
  own lives take on new urgency as they play out in larger and
  larger arenas. CounterPULSE's Winter 2008 Artists in Residence
  begin with intensely personal stories, weaving outwards to
  address issues with global relevance. Choreographer Brittany
  Brown Ceres explores how emotions are stored in our bodies
  and their implications in our actions, while experimental
  theater director Maya Gurantz focuses on the lives of Silicon
  Valley workers as they challenge the mythology of a "Clean"
  Silicon Valley.
