Last night's film finance workshop and Urban Cinema Showcase screening was a terrific affair. The evening opened with panelists Henry S. Rosenthal & George Rush discussing their experiences with film production, the danger of working with a funding "finder" who promises you the moon, and the importance committing yourself so fully to your project that it is as important to you as breathing. The film screening, which featured shorts from local youth filmmakers and several local film festivals (SF Women's Film Fest and CounterCorp Film Fest), was 90 minutes of local history, magic realism, stark documentary, and inspiring calls for change and hope. Tonight, our curating partner for the Expo's film program, Stephen Parr of SF Media Archive, has put together another amazing lineup, this time of rare 35mm shorts by San Francisco filmmakers, screening for FREE at Dolby Laboratories. Seating is limited; in case of a capacity crowd, please call 415/861-5302 to RSVP. Message-ID: Join the Expo for the Artist & Musician tonight at CounterPulse for the season debut of Shaping San Francisco's FALL TALKS 2007! We are honored to partner with Shaping SF for this auspicious event. Their Spring, Fall & Winter Talks are among the most lively, inclusive, thought-provoking and important public dialogue events you can find in San Francisco and the Bay Area. In keeping with the Expo's focus on independent culture and community, we are excited to bring you what we hope is a breakthrough dialogue on the arts funding crisis in San Francisco today: "$56 Million & Where's the Art?" TONIGHT -- Wednesday, September 12, 7:30pm CounterPULSE, 1310 Mission @ 9th St. With: Frances Phillips (Haas Foundation), John Kilacky (SF Foundation), San San Wong (SF Arts Commission), Krissy Keefer (Dance Brigade), Colleen Marlow (Art Head) A panel and audience-led dialogue focusing on SOLUTIONS, tonight's event that starts with the question: What can San Francisco do to better leverage the abundant community support for the arts? We all know how passionate folks are on the topic, and how extraordinarily challenging it is for both funders and fund- seekers. This is further complicated by the fact that we are working within a society and culture that devalues the arts in favor of commerce-driven entertainment. The resulting cognitive dissonance can be painful indeed. However, we all have the same desire -- to create and support a thriving arts sector in SF, the Bay Area and beyond. Although the title of the event, "$56 Million and Where's the Art?", is a provocative, it is NOT our intention to start arguments or propagate kvetching and griping. That's boring and counterproductive. Rather, we are focusing on looking for imaginative and positive solutions to the current arts funding crisis. Though the topic is challenging, to avoid the challenges would see us do a disservice to everything we, as arts and culture workers, collectively aspire towards: free-speech, civil society, cultural engagement, all the good stuff. Our goal is productive dialogue that can change the world for the better. That requires confronting the issue with honesty, intelligence and grace. PANELIST BIOGRAPHIES: While attending the University of Oregon, KRISSY KEEFER co-founded the Wallflower Order, the nation's first feminist dance company, in 1975. Wallflower toured the nation for almost a decade, and staged many of Keefer's original pieces before large, enthusiastic and predominantly feminist audiences. In 1980 at age 27 Keefer received her first NEA Choreographers Fellowship. In 1981 the Wallflower Order and Grupo Raiz toured the United States, Canada, and Europe to raise consciousness and resources for the peoples struggles of Nicuaragua, Chile and El Salvador. In 1984 she co-founded the Dance Brigade in Oakland to continue her explorations of dance-theater that addressed women's issues and concerns. Keefer has received numerous grants and awards, including three NEA Choreographers' Fellowships, San Francisco Magazine's 1998 Arts Achievement Award for Dance, two Individual Artist Commissions from the San Francisco Cultural Equity Grants Program, a 1997 "Goldie" Award from the Bay Guardian, Isadora Duncan Awards in 1995, 1998 and 2000 and the East Bay Express' "Artists Who Make A Difference" Award in 1993. It's hosted by the fabulous Rachel Hospodar of Pandora's Trunk. She's put together a spectacular lineup of conversationalists, booked us some music, and has pulled together some good snacks and sips for all attendees. According to Rachel: "This salon is grows out of thoughts about business, the arts, and where the worlds of expression and profit meet. The nonprofit structure is crucial to a lot of arts, media, and other commercially nonviable projects being able to exist, allowing freedom and legitimacy in seeking funding and assistance. "I?ve worked at a lot of nonprofits, though, and watched too many of them hamstring themselves through a refusal to acknowledge the lessons to be learned from for-profit business ? accountability to your audience, a focus on what works, a pragmatic approach to the work itself with a greater focus on the big picture than on specific decisions. I think that grassroots level small business has a lot to teach people on both sides of the for-profit and non-profit fence about what can and can't be done. Some talking points to consider: -Relationships between non- and for-profit entities, like Burning Man LLC and BRAF, like MOMA and their gift shop. How can entities form and nurture these kind of symbiotic relationships? What's it like? -Artists and arts projects changing traditional approaches to marketing & business. Are artists more likely to build compassionate business models? Innovative business models? -Nontraditional approaches to self-marketing (& the impact of corporate "guerilla marketing"?) How to be a business while making clear your philosophies and goals. This is what 501c3 status is for but maybe our audiences are sophisticated enough now that we can move beyond that. -Nonprofits changing for the future: re-imagining the structure of the way the arts are done. (education? cultural outreach?) -what can we use the machinery of nonprofit to accomplish that we can't any other way? When is the toll of functioning this way worth the benefits, and when is it maybe not?" The Future! Message-ID: <7f0aa3ebc820fab8beb9d528a79ff6be@artsandmedia.net> Hello folks! We're coming up on the big event tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 15, from 11am-6pm @ SomArts Cultural Center, 934 Brannan Street @ 8th Street in San Francisco. You can check the details online: Main Event Info: http://artsandmedia.net/expo/ Exhibitors -- updated with latest groups: http://artsandmedia.net/expo/#2007 Workshops: http://artsandmedia.net/expo/#onsite Performances: http://artsandmedia.net/expo/#showcase In his newsletter yesterday, V. Vale of Re/Search Publications described the Expo as "one of San Francisco's signature yearly events celebrating those who truly make San Francisco an 'interesting' city ... the artists, those who create the culture which endures ..." The Expo is and has been a unique service for independent culture and community in San Franciscans and the whole Bay Area. We've worked overtime to make tomorrow's shindig a veritable cornucopia of learning and connection opportunities. Here's an update on all that's in store ... 1) Meet the Candidates! http://artsandmedia.net/expo/#mayorlisting We have five San Francisco mayoral candidates in attendance tomorrow. Come learn firsthand what they're all about, what they're working towards, and ply them with questions. All candidates have been invited; the following have responded, confirmed, and will be on the scene: Lonnie Holmes Quintin Mecke Michael Powers "Chicken" John Rinaldi Josh Wolf 2) Portfolio Review Canceled -- NOISE comes to the Expo Due to unavoidable complications, the portfolio review for tomorrow has been canceled. We're sorry about the change, but look for new portfolio review opportunities from the Expo and our partners in the future. Instead, in Classroom Two at SomArts at 4pm tomorrow, we will be featuring an impromptu NOISE performance by SF's premier altered-cello ensemble, Filthmilk. There's room for other spontaneous performances and demonstrations, on the noisy side, following their set. Drop us a line if you'd like to give it a go. 3) Dialogue happens! Thanks to ShapingSF and Pandora's Trunk This year the Expo helped push forward significant dialogue on core issues around the arts in San Francisco, or anywhere. From the panel session at ShapingSF's Fall Talks on Wednesday, "$56 Million & Where's The Art?," to the Pandora's Trunk-produced salon on "for-profit or nonprofit arts", we saw a great turnout of thoughtful, committed individuals with plenty of ideas, opinions and vision to spare. We plan on doing a lot more of that in the future. Thanks to Shaping SF (http://shapingsf.org/) and Pandora's Trunk (http://pandorastrunk.com/) for making the conversation possible! And do drop us a line if you'd like to get involved with future dialogue programs with the Expo and our partners. 4) A message from the Expo's daddy-o ... Mr. Adam Myers We just spoke to Adam Myers, papi of the Expo, from his current home in Magdeburg, in the former East Germany. Adam, who was instrumental in conjuring the Expo into existence back in 2000, and sustaining it every year thereafter, won his MFA from the SF Art Institute last year, and has since moved to Europe to pursue his burgeoning art career. He wishes us all well, and confesses that as exciting as the art scene is over there, he's pretty wowed by this year's Expo lineup, and in particular wishes he was in town to attend the science-fiction writer's workshop tomorrow afternoon at 2:30pm. Well, next time! Meanwhile, Adam's gearing up for a move to Berlin, and welcomes any contacts and connections over there. Please drop us a line if you'd like to get in contact with him. Adam, THANK YOU for making the Expo possible, and for all your support, near and far! 5) The Future of the Expo The first Expo for the Artist took place at CELLspace in mid-July of 2000. Staged on a shoestring budget by members of CELL, Independent Arts & Media, ArtHouse and the SF Arts Commission, the event was an instant hit, as artists reeling from the "cultural clearcutting" of the dot-com boom and bust flocked to such a unique assemblage of arts community resources and organizations. In 2001, Indy Arts added the first Expo for the Musician to the lineup. The two separate events played out over a full summer weekend, again at CELLspace. Eventually, we decided that, since there are enough artists who are musicians, and musicians who are artists, the events should be combined, to better serve BOTH constituencies. Thus was born the Expo for the Artist & Musician. But the event has since come to serve much more than visual art and music. Literature, theater, dance, installations, experimental works, education, advocacy and more are all in the mix. As we move into the future, we welcome your advice and feedback about what shape the Expo should take to better serve this diverse community. A lot of fascinating questions and prospects open up from that point. Please drop us a line any time if you have any comments or advice, or if you'd like to get involved with future iterations of this mad, splendid, multicolored beast that is ... See below for a complete list of the volunteers and sponsors that made this unique event possible. 1) EVENT REPORT -- SATURDAY, SEPT. 15 This event was a brute to stage, but it went off in classic style. Attendance peaked throughout the afternoon as exhibitors and local arts-people made connections, and learned about the myriad resources available for culture-makers in the Bay Area. The candidates showed up in all their flavors, and made the rounds, meeting the arts community and pushing their agendas. The workshops were buzzing all day, as folks gathered in circles to discuss everything from intellectual property to science-fiction writing, and more. The music was *wonderful* -- Chelle & Friends unleashed a gospel/soul upwelling that made people stop in their tracks; the National Park Service Sea Chantey Crew brought high harmonies and work songs to the cavernous SomArts interior; the goofball acoustic punks and jug bands were gleeful, energetic, hilarious and dance-crazy; the Bay Area Country Dance Society brought the fiddle and the contra-dancing live on stage; and Filthmilk and Telepathik Friend closed things out with epic gushers of fuzz, feedback and texture. Another bonus: Pirate Cat Radio was doing a broadcast all day from the Expo floor, met piles of people, hosted impromptu performances, and pumped out quality radio for audiences online and off. Here are a slew of photos of the event, taken by the inimitable Scott Beale of Laughing Squid fame (and a beloved Expo sponsor!): http://laughingsquid.com/photos-from-the-eighth-annual-expo-for-the- artist-musician/ 2) VOLUNTEERS -- THANKS TO THE FOLKS WHO MADE THE EXPO COME ALIVE!
