It happens THIS SATURDAY, August 18, at UC Berkeley. You will have to throw down some change to get in, but, for anyone interested in exploring and extending the possilibities of cultural work that's focused on mission and issues rather than pure profit, this event is for you. We at Indy Arts/Expo for the Artist & Musician have long held that the nonprofit option provides intriguing opportunity for socially minded DIY folks to channel their creative energy into meaningful projects that benefit the community at large. There are advantages and drawbacks to going the nonprofit route. These need to be investigated. But you'll find few venues for doing so better than this Craigslist Foundation happening. The collective knowledge-base of the attendees is extraordinary. Here are the details. As we grow, the Expo remains a low-cost event, firmly embedded at the grassroots, and dedicated to strengthening creative and cultural activity, participation and cross-pollination at the community level. A month or so back we surveyed you about what to name a new, open, email discussion list for arts-makers. We suggested a number of names -- Art Barn, Art Share, etc. -- but the winning entry is.... Pollinator! -- Material & Human Resources for Arts & Culture http://lists.artsandmedia.net/mailman/listinfo/pollinator/ The Pollinator list will focus on connecting artists, musicians, producers and culture workers of all sorts with human and material resources for current and local art projects. For now we recommend de-emphasizing event announcements and such -- there are already plenty of resources for that. You can sign up for the Pollinator list by using the URL above. And to sweeten the deal, sometime between now and Sept. 15 we will be giving away THREE used Macintosh computers on the list to subscribers. Remember, you have to be signed up for the new listserv to be eligible. We will not be giving them away on the regular Expo list. Pollinator was dreamt up by local artist Stephanie Gerson, who proposed the idea to us, and then helped move the whole project forward. It is an open dialogue list. It's starting from scratch. If you want to get involved, you have to sign up and start posting: http://lists.artsandmedia.net/mailman/listinfo/pollinator/ One person suggested a starting Facebook community to allow artists to upload samples of their work. This is a wonderful idea, and Stephanie had already discussed something similar, along with other features which would facilitate artist-to-artist collaboration. But we decided to start small, with just a listserv. If it's widely used, Pollinator could expand include other features. So definitely keep thinking of what you might want out of this and let us know. Alrighty, that's it for now. Stephanie Gerson MS Candidate Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management University of California, Berkeley Josh Wilson Independent Arts & Media Expo for the Artist & Musician http://artsandmedia.net/ p.s. Here's the tally on the original set of names we proposed: artnik: - 1 artware: - 1 artbarn: - 1 pollinator: + 4, -1 artswap: + 1, -1 So even if we include the -1's (names people explicitly didn't like), which would put it at a 3 instead of a 4, pollinator still gets the most votes. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
